Solar Pool Covers – Two Types of Covers to Consider

Solar energy is fast becoming the preferred choice among alternative energy. People are realizing that solar power can live up to conventional energy sources and, in fact, works just fine for some applications. Solar pool covers for in-ground pools are one of those ideal uses of solar energy.

There are two types of solar pool covers. They include passive or active technology. Passive solar power involves more manual work than active solar power. For example, using the battery to turn the cover on and off would be active, whereas manually putting the pool cover on itself would be passive. Your first main choice will decide which of the two you will prefer. Active pool covers will be more expensive than passive pool covers, but both serve the purpose very well.

There are also solar pool covers suitable for in-ground pools. A model called the Blue Wave is sold with the manufacturer's word that your pool will stay fifteen degrees warmer without a cover. Prices for these models range from $60 to $100, with a price difference primarily based on your pool size.

These examples are all passive types of solar pool covers. If you want an active solar pool cover you will be looking for more advanced technology. That means more money and more work on your part. Active solar pool covers will require some installation.

You will need some sort of solar energy storage and collection device. This will usually include a solar panel, a battery, and probably wiring. One nice benefit of an active solar pool cover is that you can also use the solar energy you're gathering to power other things, such as outdoor lighting.

Your choice of an active or passive solar pool will largely depend on your budget and your personal preferences. Both will work to protect your pool, help keep it clean, and trap heat inside. They are a great investment and a perfect way to harness solar energy.
